Domain Names

Buying a domain is known as domain name registration. You register a domain for your use - this is normally for one year, but you can register most tld’s for up-to 10-years at a time; dependant on the domain registry. Choosing the right domain is very important. Most people will prefer to register a dot com if they are able to; but it all depends on your target audience too. Some TLD’s are targeted towards specific countries (known as ccTLD’s), industries and businesses. Some people choose to register multiple domain names using different extensions to secure their ‘brand’ name across multiple different territories.

There are thousands of names available; you just need to find the right one. You’ll need to be careful when choosing a name to ensure that you are not breaching a registered trademark, but otherwise you should find a name that is free and register it using your chosen domain provider.

There is a limit to the domain length, but it does vary. Typically a domain should be between 1 and 63 characters long. You should ensure that your domain accurately reflects the brand, product or service that you are offering.
